Mandawa was once a thikana. The Bhojraj Ji Kasubsub made it a thikana in the mid-18th century. Earlier references about the origin of Mandawa can be traced back to Mandu Jat, who is named after its founder. Mandu Jat first established a dhani or hamlet and dug a well to this region, which was completed in 1797. Mandawa was a remote feudal principality in the centre of the Shekhawati region. Mandawa was also an outpost for the trading routes starting from China and the Middle East. In order to protect this outpost, Thakur Nawal Singh, the Rajput ruler of Nawalgarh and Mandawa, built a fort in 1755. The township that eventually grew around the fort attracted a large community of traders, who then settled in the region. These merchants, who became quite wealthy as a result of healthy trade in the region, went on to build many havelis and baolis with their beautifully painted walls. Although the merchants eventually left Mandawa, the havelis are still intact today and draw many tourists to this quaint little town.
